Three University Park couples met Sue & Val after Tuesday’s practice round to help Sue kick-off the BJ’s Charity Classic Pro-Am at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, MA. Pinehills residents Ted Ellis & Gail Schaeffer arranged to have Bruce & Lynn Wallin (Cotuit, MA) and Walter & Sue Hughes (Mattapoisett, MA) come for a cocktail party to wish Sue well before the pro-am & charity fundraiser. Sue will play Wednesday Sept. 9th, with three amateurs while competing individually against 23 of her fellow Legends Tour professionals at the Rees Jones course at Pine Hills. Twenty-four other professionals and pro-am teams will be on the Nicklaus course in a separate competition.

Thanks to everyone for the great food, many laughs and wonderful support. Thanks to Gail & Ted for arranging such a fun evening.

I got the chance to play with the Alro Steel team of Randy & Rhonda Glick and Brian & Carrie Glick. Although we did not win the top prize, I would say we all had highlights! All 4 of my teammates had some bomber drives, putting us in some extremely favorable spots! If only we could putt as well as we could drive it, oh well, it was a great time together, I hope we get the chance to be partners again – I had a fun day with the Glicks!

This event raised $125,000 and awareness for the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids – and totalling over $1.3 Million in the event’s history!

We had a great time at the CC of Jackson, and missed seeing Randy’s Dad Al Glick there to cheer us on. Al, founder of Alro Steel, was in Ann Arbor attending the first day of official practice for the University of Michigan Wolverine football team. In fact, the Michigan’s brand new indoor practice football facility is named the AL GLICK FIELD HOUSE – Al and the entire Glick family have been longtime supporters of Michigan Athletics and in July, the Board of Regents made this designation to recognize a lifetime of dedication to the Maize and Blue! Read about this beautiful state of the art facility.

Today was certainly better, even after being 2 over after 3 holes. I made two bombs: 45 feet and 39 feet, and some fine saving par putts too. Played with Univ. of Denver player Katie Kempter, who had the low round of the day 68 including five straight birdies. I had the 4th lowest score of the day, and I moved up in the 3 days from 41st to 26th ending in a tie for 15th.

We are staying one more night, and had time to ride the chairlift and view the Crystal Mountain property from a skiers point of view.

And before they teed off, I had a photo taken on the first tee with Byron Center’s Jacqueline DeBoer (GR South Christian HS) and Legends Tour Champion Cindy Rarick. (I played 1 hour later).

Hard to believe I could ever love this score, but I have to say scoring only +5 when I played with a golfer who scored 123. Really more of a mental effort, but I’m hoping to improve by a few. I will play with my former MSU teammate Joan Garety and a player I have not met, Lisa LaFollette. Tomorrow my sister Miff will arrive with friends Ken, Cindy and Travis McKee to join Mom for the 6 mile walk.

Best wishes to my sister Cath as she gets the word on her painful knees – we miss you here. And thinking of the Lee family this week.

We had a great time at Crystal Mountain during our 2nd day of the pro-am scramble. Our 14 under par included one eagle on #10 of the Betsie Valley course. Val and Doug drove the ball great, while Jim, Judy and I were needed for the short irons and scoring shots. Just a fun kickoff for the 3 day Michigan Women’s Open starting tomorrow.

Friends to watch are high schoolers Alexandra Lipa (a student of mine who won the MHSAA State Championship from Birmingham Seaholm) on her way this fall to Yale, Jacqueline DeBoer from Byron Center, and Melissa Beurmann from Jackson. You can also follow Legends Tour pros Cindy Figg-Currier, Cindy Rarick, and Crystal Mountain’s host pro Elaine Crosby. Michigan State’s Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll is competing with several of her players, as well as former Spartans Joan Garety, Stacy Olson, and current LPGA Tour player Allison Fouch. The field of 109 is the largest ever for the Michigan Women’s Open. I look forward to having my fan club from Grand Rapids and Ionia come to watch!

We are at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade, TN where we played our first practice round. The course was quite wet due to the downpour the night before. The storm had been so severe, that all power was out where we had parked: the gas stations, the hotel marquis, and even the stop lights were out, but only for minutes – total blackout!

Stonehenge GC hole #14

This Stonehenge course is Tennessee’s #1 ranked resort course designed by Joe Lee. Its tough design includes many sidehill lies, rollling terrain, and one very extremely memorable hole #14. It is a par-3 hole, only 148 yards, but drops off from tee to green I would say 100 feet. Not only is the landing area treacherous (hazard left, bunker right, a river behind it), the winding drive down the hill is a test to all driving skills! I would say the only other times I have played a similar major dropoff were #15 at the Palms Golf Club in the Mesquite, NV area (114 foot drop) and Green Mountain National GC in Killington, VT holes#2 and #7.

Fairfield Glade is a large golf community in higher elevation, where homeowners are members of the 5 golf courses, paying a small annual fee as well as cart fee at any of the championship courses. We have rented a beautiful townhome on a lake here in the community for the week, and the commute is 3 minutes rather than the 20 down the hill to the hotels.
