Week of Lakeside, CA
March 19, 2001

Val, the caddy here. Sue and I have discussed our week and believe we have taken in any lessons that could be learned. We have already driven the 330 miles to our new destination and feel it best not to have Sue spend anymore time focusing on a disappointing tournament. So I suggested that she let me do the weekly letter...

If you're a golfer, you already know that golf is golf. Sometimes it doesn't happen the way you had planned. However if you have been following Sue and Tiger over the past couple of years, you may have lost sight of that fact. That's the kind of consistency we're all striving for isn't it?

Enough about golf then, the other disappointment this week was the casino. Seven dollars down the toilet in slot machines that I don't even understand. Remember when you could win with one cherry and you could always tell whether or not you had won? Well now there are three rows and five columns and and like a thousand possible winning combinations including zigs and zags, but rarely do any of the combinations occur. No money ever falls from the machine and most of the machines don't even accept coins. When you are done playing, if you are lucky enough to have any credits showing on the machine, the Cash Out button spits out a paper ticket that you take to the cashier. No cardboard cups overflowing with quarters and nickels, no clanking in the metal trays... at least in this casino, the days of subtle gloating are over.

In all honesty, we spent less than an hour in the casino which was really very nice, as was everything at the Barona Indian Reservation (www.barona.com). The service was amazing from the casino to the golf course. Speaking of the golf course... what a beautiful setting and a fun course... the greens were really slick and super firm as it is a brand new facility... the giant hills that I carried the clubs over were disguised as gentle slopes, thereby giving me a psychological advantage... the practice area was first class all the way.

As we drove through Santee, California everyday on our way from the hotel to the golf course, we were reminded of the school shooting that had occurred there a week before. Perspective is everything.

Though I won't be speaking to you from this pulpit every week, please stop by the Caddy Shack once in a while to see what I'm up to there.

Thanks- Val B.

P.S. - Way to go Annika - 59!!!

Sue E.
